NCERT develops AI and computational thinking module for classes 9 to 12

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has developed an introductory module on Computational Thinking (CT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) for students of Classes 9 to 12. The initiative aims to help school students understand emerging technologies, improve problem-solving skills and learn the responsible use of AI.

Announced on October 23, 2026, the module is aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and focuses on practical, activity-based learning. Students will explore AI concepts through classroom discussions, exercises, experimentation and hands-on activities. The learning activities can be conducted with or without digital devices, making the module accessible to schools with different levels of technological infrastructure.

The module will introduce students to computational thinking, AI applications, data privacy, digital safety, fairness and the limitations of AI-generated information. It will also encourage students to verify information produced by AI tools and understand the importance of human judgement and creativity.

According to NCERT, the programme aims to develop critical thinking, creativity and logical reasoning rather than limiting learning to theoretical concepts. It also focuses on helping students recognise misinformation and understand the ethical challenges associated with AI.

The initiative is part of the broader effort to integrate computational thinking and artificial intelligence into school education in line with NEP 2020.

Through this module, NCERT aims to prepare students to understand, evaluate and use AI technologies responsibly while developing skills needed in an increasingly technology-driven world.
