IIT Madras launches finishing school for Biotechnology Graduates

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has launched UDYOG (Upskilling and Development for Young Graduates), a finishing school aimed at making biotechnology graduates industry-ready through practical training and industry exposure.

The initiative has been introduced through SynBioME, the IIT Madras-TICEL Biofoundry, to bridge the gap between academic education and industry requirements in biotechnology and biomanufacturing.

The programme will follow a three-stage training model. The first stage will include three months of online learning through IIT Madras’s Centre for Outreach and Digital Education (CODE), with lectures from industry experts and demonstrations of industrial practices.

Students selected for the next stage will undergo four weeks of hands-on training at the IIT Madras Biofoundry, gaining practical experience in laboratory processes and biomanufacturing. The final stage will provide opportunities to engage with industry partners and pursue internships.

The programme is open to pre-final-year and final-year BTech, MTech and MSc students specialising in biotechnology and allied disciplines at institutions across India.

The first batch is scheduled to begin on January 18, 2027, with early-bird registration closing on December 15, 2026.

Through this initiative, IIT Madras aims to strengthen practical skills among biotechnology graduates and improve their readiness for careers in the biotechnology and biopharmaceutical industries.
