Madras University Approves Sutherland AI Inclusive Lab

University of Madras Syndicate on 6 Nov 2026 approved a Sutherland MoU for an AI Lab for Inclusive Education and Gender Lab upgrade at Women’s Studies.

The Syndicate of the University of Madras (UoM) on Friday, 6 November 2026, approved an MoU with Sutherland Global Services to set up an Artificial Intelligence laboratory at the Department of Women Studies in Chennai, upgrading an earlier Gender Lab backed by a ₹50 lakh April 2019 allocation, The Hindu reported.

Sutherland, a digital-driven business transformation company, will renew the earlier MoU, install new systems and infrastructure at the Gender Lab, and establish an Artificial Intelligence Lab for Inclusive Education to develop e-modules for a course on Application of Artificial Intelligence. The lockdown closure of the earlier lab had destroyed its digital equipment after the online Gender Sensitisation and Workplace Readiness course had run across the university’s four campuses.

What the University of Madras–Sutherland MoU covers

According to the Syndicate agenda for 5 November 2026 (item 32), the proposal renews the MoU for the Sutherland AI Lab (SAIL) and Sutherland Centre of Excellence (SCoE) at the Department of Women’s Studies as a corporate social responsibility (CSR) commitment for three years, with no financial commitment by the university. The full agenda is available as a public PDF of the Syndicate meeting papers.

The new arrangement upgrades the Gender Lab that followed the April 2019 MoU and adds the inclusive-education AI facility so students can access structured e-learning on AI applications alongside revived gender-sensitisation coursework.

Why an AI lab at Women’s Studies matters

Housing an AI Lab for Inclusive Education inside Women’s Studies links digital skills to gender equity and workplace readiness rather than treating them as separate tracks. That fits a wider Tamil Nadu push on classroom AI capacity: the state has already partnered with Google to launch AI labs in Chennai and is training government school teachers to build AI-powered lessons in core subjects.

Other Indian universities are likewise embedding AI in mainstream study. Calicut University plans to overhaul UG and PG curricula with AI, Agra University has made AI and cyber security courses mandatory, and BITS Pilani recently revamped its undergraduate curriculum for the AI era.

Other Syndicate decisions (secondary)

The same Syndicate sitting also cleared long-pending faculty-qualification approvals for Arts and Science self-financing and government-aided colleges—about 400 proposals—and approved principals for Agurchand Manmull Jain College, Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda College, Shrimathi Devkunvar Nanalal Bhatt Vaishnav College for Women, Sir Theagaraya College, and Madras School of Social Work. The AI and Gender Lab MoU remains the lead institutional story.
