Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim met Kerala Sunni leader Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musliyar at the Markaz campus in Karanthur, Kozhikode, during his five-day visit to India. The meeting focused on strengthening cooperation in education, culture and academic activities, along with opportunities for educational exchanges between Malaysian institutions and the Markaz.
Anwar arrived in Kozhikode after attending the BRICS Summit in New Delhi and was received by representatives of the Markaz before holding discussions with Kanthapuram. A key area of the meeting was the possibility of developing educational exchange programmes between Markaz and higher education institutions in Malaysia.
The discussions also covered the welfare of the Indian community in Malaysia, highlighting the broader people-to-people links between India and Malaysia.
During a reception organised at the Markaz Convention Centre, Anwar was presented with an Excellence Award instituted by the Sheikh Abubakar Foundation. Kanthapuram also presented the Malaysian Prime Minister with a handwritten manuscript of Sahih al-Bukhari in recognition of international Hadith recitation programmes organised under the Malaysian government’s initiative.

The visit included a dinner hosted by Kanthapuram, attended by prominent figures from the religious, political, social, cultural and business communities. Anwar later visited the Madavoor CM Valiyaullahi shrine along with Kanthapuram.
This was Anwar Ibrahim’s second visit to Kerala to meet Kanthapuram, following his earlier visit to the Markaz in September 2022. The engagement highlights the potential for deeper India-Malaysia cooperation in education, culture, tourism, investment and connectivity.
