CBSE retains 33% passing rule for class 10 board exams 2026-27

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has clarified that there will be no change in the Class 10 passing criteria for the 2026-27 academic session. Students appearing for the board examinations will continue to require at least 33 per cent marks in a subject, calculated by combining their internal assessment and external examination scores.

The clarification comes after a recent CBSE communication led to confusion over whether students would have to secure 33 per cent marks separately in internal and external assessments. During a CBSE webinar, a board official confirmed that the proposed requirement for separate qualifying marks in the external examination had been withdrawn.

For Class 10, the existing 80:20 assessment structure will continue for the 2026-27 session, with the passing requirement remaining the same as that followed in 2025-26. CBSE has also stated that there is no change in the question paper design or overall assessment pattern for the upcoming examinations.

The rule is different for Class 12. Students appearing for the senior secondary board examinations must continue to obtain at least 33 per cent marks separately in their internal assessment and external examination to pass a subject.

CBSE is also preparing Sample Question Papers and Marking Schemes for Classes 10 and 12. These resources are intended to provide schools and students with a clear examination framework and support consistency in assessment and curriculum coverage. The Class 10 sample papers and marking schemes for the 2026-27 session are already listed on the CBSE Academic website.

The clarification is expected to ease concerns among Class 10 students, parents and schools ahead of the 2027 board examinations, confirming that the existing combined-mark system will continue for the upcoming academic session.
