Karnataka approves ₹35 crore AI hub at IIIT-Bangalore

The Karnataka government has approved a ₹35 crore investment to establish a dedicated Artificial Intelligence Hub at the International Institute of Information Technology-Bangalore (IIIT-B), strengthening the state’s efforts to build a comprehensive AI education, research and innovation ecosystem.

The state Cabinet cleared the proposal on September 9. Electronics, IT/BT and Home Minister Priyank Kharge said the proposed hub will play a key role in laying the groundwork for Karnataka’s planned AI University.

The Karnataka AI Hub will focus on developing industry-ready AI talent through certification courses and finishing-school programmes aimed at students, graduates and job seekers. The initiative is expected to help bridge the gap between academic learning and the evolving requirements of the technology industry.

A key component of the project will be an AI Living Lab, equipped with computing infrastructure and real-world testbeds. The facility will provide researchers, startups, companies and government agencies with an environment to develop, test and validate AI-based solutions for practical applications.

The hub is being positioned as an initial step towards Karnataka’s proposed AI University, which was announced earlier this year by Chief Minister DK Shivakumar as part of the state’s broader strategy to establish a strong ecosystem for artificial intelligence education, research and innovation.

The proposed university is envisioned as a government-driven institution focused on AI talent development, advanced research and collaboration among academia, industry and government. Through the AI Hub and the proposed university, Karnataka aims to strengthen its position as a major centre for AI skills, innovation and technology-led growth in India.
