The Ministry of Education has approved the establishment of five Centres of Excellence (CoEs) dedicated to the study, research and preservation of India’s classical languages. The initiative covers Classical Assamese, Classical Bengali, Classical Marathi, Classical Pali and Classical Prakrit.
The new centres will be established across five higher education institutions in different states. Tezpur University in Assam will host the Centre for Classical Assamese, while Visva-Bharati University in West Bengal will focus on Classical Bengali. The Centre for Classical Marathi will be set up at Deccan College Post-Graduate and Research Institute in Pune. Central University of Odisha will host the Classical Pali centre, while Central University of Gujarat will establish the Centre for Classical Prakrit.
The centres are expected to create stronger academic platforms for advanced research and scholarship in these languages. Their work will also extend to documenting and digitising linguistic and literary resources, helping preserve important textual and cultural material for future generations.
Another focus will be improving access to India’s classical language traditions and encouraging their wider dissemination. By placing the centres across Assam, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Odisha and Gujarat, the initiative also aims to strengthen regional ecosystems for higher education and specialised research.

The Ministry said the move is intended to build institutional capacity around India’s linguistic and literary heritage while giving universities a greater role in research and scholarship related to classical languages.
The establishment of these centres marks an institutional push towards combining academic research with preservation and digital documentation, potentially creating new avenues for scholars and students working in India’s classical linguistic traditions.
