Delhi Plans Hostels for 10,000 Students After Satya Niketan Collapse

The Delhi government has announced plans to develop hostel facilities for 10,000 students studying in colleges and universities across the capital. The proposed accommodation will cater to both male and female students and is intended to provide safer and more affordable housing options.

Work Begins on Hostel Plan

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the government has already started working on the proposal. Discussions have been held with departments that can undertake construction, while suitable locations are being identified.

The government is also preparing a policy covering the facilities and amenities that will be available in the proposed hostels.

Focus on Safe and Affordable Accommodation

The proposed facilities are expected to go beyond providing additional hostel beds. The government plans to create a living environment where students can focus on their studies without having to deal with concerns around accommodation, food and safety.

The initiative is aimed particularly at students who come to Delhi from different parts of the country for higher education and often depend on private PGs, rented rooms or shared accommodation.

Satya Niketan Collapse Brings Student Safety Into Focus

The announcement follows the collapse of a five-storey PG building in Satya Niketan, which killed seven people, including five Delhi University students. The incident has brought renewed attention to the shortage of safe student accommodation in the capital.

Delhi University Also Expanding Hostel Capacity

The move comes alongside efforts by the University of Delhi to increase its own residential capacity. DU currently has 3,422 hostel seats, while its colleges provide another 3,788 seats.

Ongoing and planned projects are expected to increase these numbers to 7,344 seats at the university level and 5,410 across colleges, taking the combined capacity to 12,754 seats.

Next Steps

The Delhi government will now work towards finalising locations, construction plans and the policy framework for the proposed 10,000-student hostel facilities. The initiative is expected to add to the city’s institutional accommodation capacity while addressing concerns around student housing and safety.
